Richard Onapatum | Katakwi, (UG) – President Yoweri Museveni Friday honoured Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, the vice president of Uganda with the medal of the Most Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa (Grand Commander).
Alupo who is also the Katakwi district woman Member of Parliament was decorated during the Women’s Day celebrations at Boma Grounds in Katakwi district.
The ‘Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa’ (Grand Commander) is the highest Civilian honour in Uganda, established in 2001 under the National Honours and Awards Act as amended.
During her decoration, President Museveni praised Alupo’s resilience, dedication, outstanding achievements and exceptional contribution towards the country’s development.

The president told the cheerful crowd, that Alupo’s dedication to Uganda and her impactful work in empowering women have earned her this distinguished recognition thus cementing her status as a prominent figure in the nation’s leadership landscape.
At the ceremony, 53 other individuals, who were recognized for their outstanding contributions to various fields, joined the vice president.
Among them were Soroti Resident City Commissioner Peter Pex Paak and Teddy Acham, the NRM mobiliser whose dedication and commitment were acknowledged during the event.
During Alupo’s citation, Maj. Gen. George Igumba, the Chancery to the Presidential awards committee explained that ‘Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa’ (Grand Commander award is reserved for special categories of leaders and individuals who have made significant contributions to Uganda’s social and economic development.
The vice president joins a distinguished list of African leaders who have received this accolade, including Tanzanian former leaders Julius Nyerere (posthumous) and H.E Jakaya Kikwete, Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Theodora Obiang Nguema Mbasogo President of Equatorial Guinea, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Mozambican former president Armando Guebuza.
