President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has reiterated his call to Ugandans to create wealth through commercial agriculture with “ekibaro” (calculation).
“Some people are unaware of our history, but this region is primarily known for its wealth creators. In the villages, if you don’t work for wealth, you’re considered a vagabond,” he emphasized.
The President made these remarks during his Presidential Address on Wealth Creation, held at State Lodge, Nakasero, on Thursday, February 29.
President Museveni emphasized that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government prioritizes the politics of economics and wealth creation. He urged people to become wealth creators and reject the politics of parasites and sectarianism.
“As a wealth creator, there’s no Ugandan I don’t like. I love all Ugandans because they support products like milk, beef, and bananas. However, to expand our market, we need to focus on regional markets,” he explained.
President Museveni highlighted the importance of developing Uganda’s indigenous wealth and modernizing it for success. He outlined the four sectors crucial for this development, including commercial agriculture with “ekibaro.”
He differentiated between extensive agriculture, suitable for large landowners, and intensive agriculture, suitable for small-scale farmers. He stressed the importance of enterprise selection for maximizing income.
Addressing cattle farming, the President advised a hybrid approach, combining free-range grazing with supplementary feeding to increase productivity.
He cited the success of promoting Friesian cows over traditional Ankole cows in boosting milk production. However, he noted the need to address the issue of free-range grazing for further improvement.
President Museveni highlighted the positive impact of his wealth creation initiatives in Gomba, particularly through education and enterprise diversification.
He emphasized the need for irrigation schemes to enhance productivity and urged Ugandans to emulate successful farmers like Mr. Richard Nyakana and Hon. Fred Byamukama.
Lastly, he called upon leaders to focus on solving the issue of homestead income as a means to alleviate poverty among Ugandans.
