KAMPALA—Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Secretary General and Kasambya County Member of Parliament David Kabanda has revealed that the late businessman Rajiv Ruparelia was the principal sponsor of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s 45th birthday celebrations held in 2019.
Speaking during an exclusive interview with Joseph Kisitu, host of the online political talk show Direct Shot and presenter on Baba TV, Kabanda paid tribute to Rajiv, describing him as a generous supporter whose contribution was instrumental in the success of the event.
While praying for the deceased businessman’s soul to rest in eternal peace, Kabanda recounted how Rajiv stepped in to provide extensive logistical support for the birthday function.
“I was the first person to organize Muhoozi’s birthday in 2019 and I still remember everyone who helped me make it successful. Rajiv was the biggest sponsor because he offered a free venue at Speke Resort Munyonyo and also catered for the food and drinks for hundreds of guests who attended,” Kabanda revealed.
According to Kabanda, several other prominent individuals also contributed financially towards the celebrations. He disclosed that Edwin Karugire, former Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka and Vincent Bagiire, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, each contributed Shs2 million, while MAAIF Cabinet Minister Frank Tumwebaze contributed Shs4 million, among other supporters.
Rajiv Ruparelia’s Legacy In Business And Philanthropy
Rajiv Ruparelia was widely regarded as one of Uganda’s most influential young entrepreneurs and business executives. Born on January 2, 1990, he was the son of billionaire businessman Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, chairman of the Ruparelia Group, one of East Africa’s largest privately owned business conglomerates.
After completing his education in the United Kingdom, Rajiv returned to Uganda and assumed leadership responsibilities within the family business empire. As Managing Director of the Ruparelia Group, he spearheaded modernization and expansion efforts across the conglomerate’s interests in hospitality, real estate, education, agriculture and leisure.
Beyond his corporate accomplishments, Rajiv built a reputation as a philanthropist who quietly supported youth initiatives, community projects, sports development and charitable causes. Friends and associates often described him as approachable, generous and deeply committed to uplifting others.
His passion for motorsport also earned him recognition within Uganda’s rallying fraternity, where he competed in several national competitions and inspired many young racers.
Tragic Death At Busabala Junction
Rajiv’s promising life came to a tragic end in the early hours of May 3, 2025, following a fatal road accident at Busabala Junction near the Munyonyo area.
Rajiv had just returned from London to attend the wedding celebrations of a close friend, the son of former Deputy Chief Justice Richard Buteera. Following the festivities, the businessman was involved in a devastating crash that claimed his life and plunged the nation into mourning.
The accident drew widespread attention and prompted an outpouring of tributes from government officials, business leaders, religious figures and ordinary Ugandans, many of whom hailed him as a visionary entrepreneur and compassionate humanitarian.
Posthumous Recognition At PAP Global Awards
In recognition of his enduring humanitarian impact and contribution to Uganda’s social and economic development, Rajiv Ruparelia is set to receive a posthumous honour at the 9th PAP Global Awards.
The award will be presented by Pan African Pyramid during the prestigious continental ceremony scheduled for August 29, 2026, at Speke Resort Munyonyo — a venue closely associated with Rajiv’s legacy and one that he frequently supported in hosting national and international events.
According to the organizers, the posthumous recognition seeks to celebrate Rajiv’s exceptional commitment to philanthropy, youth empowerment, business excellence and community transformation, values that continue to inspire countless Ugandans and Africans beyond his passing.
As fresh revelations emerge about his generous support towards major national events such as Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s 45th birthday celebrations, many believe the upcoming PAP Global Awards honour will serve as a fitting tribute to a man whose influence transcended business and whose legacy continues to resonate across Uganda and the African continent.
