SC Villa secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mbarara City, bolstering their chances in the Uganda Premier League title race.

The Jogoos who got the opener through Umar Lutalo, needed Hakim Kiwanuka winner to claim maximum points after Henry Kitegenyi had levelled for the Visitors.

SC Villa drew first blood in the 20th minute. Umar Lutalo found the back of the net with a well-executed free kick, leaving Mbarara goalkeeper Ronald Mutebi helpless.

However, Mbarara City refused to back down and managed to equalize just before halftime. Henry Kitengenyi capitalized on a goalkeeper error after Jean Brady Wokorach spilled a cross from Innocent Wafula.

The second half saw both teams pushing for a decisive goal, with SC Villa ultimately seizing the opportunity in the 68th minute. Hakim Kiwanuka capitalized on a defensive lapse from Mbarara City, firing a powerful shot into the roof of the net to give his team the lead once again.

Despite Mbarara City’s relentless efforts to find an equalizer, SC Villa held firm defensively.

The match was not without controversy as Mbarara City was denied what appeared to be a clear penalty after defender Juma Ramathan’s challenge inside the box went unpunished by the referee.

With this crucial victory, SC Villa climbs to third place in the Uganda Premier League standings with 39 points, keeping their title aspirations alive.

And they are five points behind league leaders Kitara, who have played two more games.
