Security Guard Arrested Over Theft of UGX 29 Million and Gold Worth UGX 500 Million

Kampala-Police in Kampala have arrested a private security guard in connection with the theft of cash and gold valued at over UGX 500 million.

The Suspect.

The suspect, identified as Akena Justine, was attached to Magnum Security Company and had been deployed to guard premises of Goldex Uganda Limited along Mawanda Road at the time of the incident.

According to police, the theft occurred on April 10, 2026, when Akena allegedly stole a bag containing UGX 29 million in cash and 900 grams of gold estimated to be worth approximately UGX 500 million. The property is said to belong to Ms. Katuramu Maggie.

It is further alleged that after committing the theft, Akena locked up the premises and went into hiding.

Police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, confirmed that the suspect was arrested on April 15, 2026, at around 10:30pm from Gaspa Village in Bweyale Town Council following a targeted operation.

Upon interrogation, Akena reportedly admitted to the offence. Preliminary investigations indicate that he used part of the stolen money to open a retail shop, where he was eventually tracked down and apprehended.

He is currently being held at Mawanda Road Police Station as investigations continue. Police say preparations are underway to have him formally charged and produced in court.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring accountability and urged members of the public and private security firms to remain vigilant in safeguarding property.
