St. Cyprian, Naalya S.S Win Mukono Secondary Schools’ Region Basketball Championship

St. Cyprian High School Kyabakadde and Naalya Senior Secondary School Lugazi were on Saturday crowned the Mukono Region Basketball boys and girls’ champions respectively.

Hosted at Seeta High School A Level Campus, St. Cyprian defeated the host team at 58-49 baskets whereas Naalya Senior Secondary School hammered Seeta High School Mukono Campus at 30-22 baskets.

Ismail Miti Ssewaya, the secretary general Mukono district region secondary school association commended the standard of the prayers presented by the participating teams.

To get to the finals, St. Cyprian trounced Seroma Christian High School yet Naalya Senior School outscored Seroma Christian High school for the girls.

Both boys’ and girls’ final games were played till late, close to 8:00pm when it was totally dark, prompting the amperes to use their phone lights as a source of light more so to the one who was recording the scores on the side of the boys’ game as the court lacked lights.

Joseph Kamya, the headteacher of St. Cyprian High School located at Kyabakadde village in Kyampisi sub-county, Mukono district said that winning this championship has taken his school five consecutive years ever since it started participating in the annual secondary schools’ basketball competitions.

“I credit my boys and school coach for such a competitive and interesting final game against our host. On behalf of St. Cyprian Kyabakadde, I am delighted that we do not only outcompete other schools in academics but also in sports,” Kamya said.

He added; “Given the quality of my prayers, they are all good materials who can even join the national team. I believe they will also stage a very good game at the national level at Ndejje come April 26, 2024.”

Paul Bazira, the deputy headteacher Seeta High School A Campus also credited Seeta Schools for talent development.

Bazira said that Seeta High School A Campus won the Mukono district boys basketball championship only to finish as the first runners-up at the region level whereas Seeta High School Mukono Campus won the girls championship for Mukono district.

“Also Seeta High School Mukono Campus scooped the second position in the girls’ championship at the region. It should also be highlighted that Seeta High School Mukono won Seeta High School A Campus to continue to the finals on the side of girls,” he said.

Bazira added that their teams will again come back with trophies from the national competitions where Seeta High School A Campus and Seeta High School Mukono are among the six schools representing Mukono region for both boys and girls respectively.

Ssewaya noted that the national games will commence at Ndejje Senior Secondary School on April 26, 2024.

“Mukono region is to be represented by; St. Cyprian High School Kyabakadde, Seeta High School A Level Campus and Seroma Christian High School for boys. On the side of girls; Naalya Senior School Lugazi, Seeta High School Mukono Campus and Seroma Christian High School,” he said.

Richard Muhummuza, the chairperson of Uganda Senior Secondary Schools Association for Mukono Region urged the teams that made it to the nationals to keep training and get ready for other teams from different regions so that they can also emerge winners even from the national level.

“I commend the schools for participation and funding their teams. Students go to school not only to acquire the academic part of it but also for other co-curricular activities which are currently so productive to those who give them their best time and interest,” he noted.
