The transition into a new term and a new class often brings excitement and anticipation for pupils and students alike, as they look forward to new experiences and opportunities for growth. However, amidst the excitement, mental health challenges such as stress can pose significant obstacles to their well-being and academic success.

Dr. Sabrina Kitaka, a pediatrician, highlighted various factors contributing to student stress, including separation from parents, bullying, poverty, and disciplinary measures in schools. She emphasized the detrimental effects of stress on academic performance and the risk of school dropouts if left unaddressed.

Addressing a group of Interact Club members from different schools during the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) training organized by Rotary District 9214, Dr. Kitaka underscored the importance of recognizing and managing symptoms of depression among youth. These symptoms may include loss of interest, sleep disturbances, declining academic performance, irritability, and feelings of sadness or hopelessness.

Dr. Kitaka emphasized the importance of managing stress through activities that increase dopamine levels, such as regular exercise and maintaining a positive attitude. She also stressed the significance of adequate sleep and a balanced diet in promoting mental well-being among students.

In addition to lifestyle factors, Dr. Kitaka encouraged students to seek professional help if they experience symptoms of mental illness, such as anxiety or panic attacks. Early intervention, she explained, is crucial in preventing the escalation of mental health issues and improving overall well-being.

Rotarian Francisco Ssemwanga, the District Governor 9214, highlighted the role of RYLA training in imparting leadership skills and moral values to young people. He emphasized the importance of grooming the youth, who represent a significant portion of Uganda’s population, to become responsible leaders and active members of society.

During the RYLA training, students are equipped with skills such as empathy, teamwork, and community service, essential for effective leadership. Ssemwanga emphasized the importance of instilling these values in youth to ensure a brighter future for the country.

Rotarian Pius Lubwama, the district Interact chairperson, provided insights into the origins and objectives of the RYLA program, which aims to empower youth with leadership skills and foster international exchange programs. He emphasized the program’s role in promoting global citizenship and cultural exchange among students from different countries.
