The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has warned against the high number of MPs, which he said is further pushing the country economically and keeping it behind. He was attending the Mass of the Resurrection of the Son of God at the Cathedral of Kasana Luweero.

The Katikkiro said every Ugandan has many questions to ask about the expenditure of money in Parliament, starting with the number of 529 MPs, out of Uganda’s 44 million people.

That means one representative for every 8,000 people. He said in comparison India with a population of 1.4 billion people has 630 MPs, which means 2.2m people have one MP.

He suggested that an independent committee should be set up to be responsible for salary and allowances increases in all institutions including parliament, the executive and the judiciary, to reduce the practice of some institutions distributing huge amounts of money and stifling Ugandans.

The Katikkiro also wondered whether the laws passed by the Ugandan parliament, or whether they are what we need the country needs to lift people out of poverty to make Uganda a better country.

Meanwhile, the Katikkiro praised the Kasana Luweero district, which is located in Bulemeezi county, for the efforts put into the Kingdom’s recovery plans.

The Katikkiro said the district is very enthusiastic about the Mwaanyi Terimba programme, and the Kabaka’s people have already stopped mourning.

The Katikkiro said that regret in every situation keeps people behind, adding that where there are challenges, spend time finding ways to overcome them.

The Katikkiro in a special way urged the people of the Kabaka in Buganda and the rest of Uganda to reflect on the King’s Easter message, and asked all those mentioned who knew themselves to change their practices.

The arch bishop of Kasana Luweero, Bishop Lawrence Mukasa, who presided over the Easter Mass, urged God’s people to continue to do the works of God at all times.
