Police in Mbale City have detained four individuals under suspicion of pilfering construction materials intended for the development of Kaguta Road, a project overseen by Mbale City Council. Among the stolen items are bags of cement and hardcore stones, crucial components for the ongoing construction work in the city’s Industrial City Division.

Kaguta Road bears significance as it is named after President Museveni and holds historical importance as one of the routes he utilized during his involvement in the bush war.

Confirming the arrests, Elgon Regional police spokesperson Rogers Taitika disclosed that the apprehended individuals include Denis Mwalye, the road Inspector of Mbale City and site engineer, alongside truck driver Yunus Obondo affiliated with Mbale City Council. Additionally, Abdul Karim and Amuza Mafabi, both members of the road construction crew, were also implicated.

According to Taitika, the suspects were apprehended through the collaborative efforts of local leaders and vigilant residents, who subsequently turned them over to law enforcement authorities.

Taitika further mentioned that upon completion of the investigations, the case file would be submitted to the Resident State Attorney (RSA) for legal guidance. The suspects are anticipated to face charges related to theft and abuse of office.

Hamuza Banja, Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC) In-Charge of Mbale Industrial City Division, highlighted the intervention of the police in rescuing the suspects from a potentially violent mob seeking retribution.

Moses Mwambu, LC1 chairman of Marale cell, commended the vigilance demonstrated by residents in apprehending the suspects and urged law enforcement agencies to ensure thorough investigation and prosecution.

Twahilu Bwanga, representing Marale Ward as the area Councilor, recounted that the suspects were apprehended while in the act of loading stolen construction materials onto a truck, indicating a premeditated operation to pilfer from the project’s stockpile.
