Police in Kampala have arrested three suspects in connection with the death of professional rugby player Sydney Gongodyo following an incident that allegedly involved mob action on June 5, 2026.
The suspects, identified as Ssebagala Noordin, Ayebazibwe Roden, and Namukose Juliet, are currently being held at Kira Road Police Station as investigations into the circumstances surrounding Gongodyo’s death continue.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police, preliminary findings indicate that Gongodyo was allegedly attacked by members of the public who accused him of snatching a woman’s handbag. However, police emphasized that investigations are still ongoing and that the exact sequence of events has not yet been established.
Police officers responded to the scene and rushed the injured rugby player to Mulago National Referral Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite efforts by medical personnel, Gongodyo succumbed to his injuries at approximately 7:00 p.m. on the same day.
In a statement issued by Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala, authorities confirmed that the three suspects are assisting investigators as detectives work to establish individual roles and responsibilities in the incident.
“The three suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations,” the statement said.
The death of the rugby player has sparked concern over the continued prevalence of mob justice, a practice that security agencies and human rights advocates have repeatedly warned against.
Police strongly condemned the incident and urged members of the public to report suspected criminal activities to law enforcement authorities rather than resorting to violence.
“We strongly condemn all forms of mob justice and reiterate our call to members of the public to report suspected criminal activities to the relevant authorities rather than taking the law into their own hands,” police said.
Authorities warned that mob action undermines the rule of law and can result in the injury or death of innocent people before investigations are conducted.
As investigations continue, police have pledged to provide further updates on the case and urged anyone with information that could assist investigators to come forward.
The death of Gongodyo has left Uganda’s rugby fraternity mourning the loss of one of its players, while raising fresh concerns about public vigilantism and the need for lawful approaches to crime prevention and justice.
