Vipers secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Iganga Young FC in the Round of 16 clash of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.
The match, held at the Kitende, saw Vipers live as advertised against an Eastern Regional League side to seal their spot in the quarterfinals.
And they did this without head coach Livingstone Mbabazi who the club has since commented that he is down with Malaria.
The Venoms wasted no time asserting their authority, with Karim Watambala opening the scoring from the penalty spot after Fumador Asiwome was brought down in the box.
Watambala calmly converted the penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and putting Vipers in the lead.
In the second half, Mohammed Salem Ekbad doubled Vipers’ advantage with a stunning curling effort from the edge of the box, finding the bottom corner with precision.
The home side continued to press forward, and Fazil Tumwine added a third goal, tapping in a cross from Watambala to seal the victory.
Vipers had earlier threatened with Allan Okello and Milton Karisa both going close to breaking the deadlock. Karisa, in particular, was unlucky to see his effort cannon off the woodwork.
The win sees Vipers progress to the quarterfinals of the Uganda Cup, keeping alive their hopes of defending the title they won last season when they beat Police in Lira.
Currently sitting seven points behind league leaders Kitara, the Uganda Cup gives Vipers chance to claim silverware this season.
Joining Vipers in the quarterfinals are KCCA, NEC, Kitara, BUL, Pajule Lions, and Police.
Meanwhile, it’s the end of the road for Iganga Young, who earlier caused an upset by eliminating Big League side Kyetume to reach this stage of the competition.
