The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has reported a noticeable improvement in the quality of candidates’ work in recent examinations. Examiners have observed higher mean scores in various subject areas, indicating an overall enhancement in candidate performance. Particularly noteworthy is the improvement in Biology, a subject that has historically faced challenges in terms of performance.

Despite these positive trends, the core science subjects continue to exhibit performance levels below the desired standards. UNEB has previously highlighted several factors contributing to this situation in the releases of the #UACE2023 results. One significant factor is the teaching methodology employed, which tends to focus heavily on theory, leading to candidates lacking practical skills necessary for performing experiments, recording data, and interpreting results effectively.

Practical experience-based questions have posed difficulties for candidates, further exacerbating the issue. This highlights the importance of integrating practical components into the curriculum to better prepare students for assessments. UNEB’s insights shed light on areas for improvement within the education system, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that combines theoretical knowledge with practical application.
