The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has risen sharply to 782 after health authorities recorded 72 new infections within a 24-hour period, marking one of the largest single-day increases since the outbreak began.
According to the government’s latest situation report released on Sunday, the outbreak has resulted in 181 confirmed deaths. Health officials continue to battle the deadly virus as it spreads across several communities in the country’s eastern region.
The outbreak, which is the DRC’s 17th recorded Ebola epidemic, remains concentrated in three eastern provinces: Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu. However, authorities have expressed concern over the virus’s continued geographic expansion.
For the first time since the outbreak began, confirmed cases have been reported in the Nia-Nia health zone in Ituri Province and the Mabalako health zone in North Kivu Province. The latest figures indicate that Ebola cases have now been confirmed in 20 of Ituri’s 36 health zones and in 10 of North Kivu’s 34 health zones. South Kivu has reported confirmed cases in one health zone.
Health experts warn that efforts to contain the disease are being complicated by widespread mistrust of government medical teams in some affected communities. Resistance to health interventions, misinformation, and security challenges have hindered response measures, including contact tracing, vaccination campaigns, and treatment efforts.
Ebola is a severe and often fatal illness that spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals. Symptoms include fever, severe weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, and, in some cases, internal and external bleeding.
Authorities are urging residents to cooperate with healthcare workers and report suspected cases promptly to prevent further transmission. International health organizations continue to support the government’s response as officials work to contain one of the country’s most challenging Ebola outbreaks in recent years.
