A suspected thief has been shot dead in Hoima district.   Wadigali Matinde 33, a resident of Buliisa district was killed on Monday by a UPDF soldier at Kihungura village, in Kiganja sub-county.

Reports indicate that Matinde and others still at large raided the China Chongqing International Construction Company Limited-CICO camp in Kihungura village while driving a vehicle registration number UAD 123L pick-up.

CICO is a company that undertook the construction of the 111km Hoima-Butiaba-Wanseko road in the Albertine region.

They reportedly stole iron bars from the company site and loaded them in their vehicle.

However, a UPDF soldier who had been deployed to guard the site, waited for the thugs to first load the suspected stolen iron bars.

After loading the iron bars, the thugs attempted to flee the area but the soldier who is yet to be identified reportedly ordered them to stop. They insisted and resorted to over-speeding, prompting the soldier to discharge bullets.

Matinde who was seated behind was reportedly hit by one of the bullets that killed him instantly.

One other suspect Isma Bategeka was arrested while the others fled the area abandoning their vehicle by the roadside.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson explains that police promptly rushed to the crime scene and picked up the deceased’s body which was later conveyed to the Hoima city mortuary where it is currently lying.

He explains that Matinde succumbed to bullet wounds adding that the arrested suspect is currently being detained at the Hoima central police station.

The trio then disguised as transporters of fish to Arua district but instead were found with 44 jerrycans of suspected stolen fuel. The 44 jerrycans were recovered from their box body vehicle.

Police reportedly received intelligence-led information that the trio had connived with some truck drivers belonging to CICO and siphoned fuel from their trucks.

On October 4, 2020, Muhammad Mutazindwa was shot dead by Uganda Peoples Defense Forces-UPDF soldiers attached to the Marine Brigade who were guarding road construction equipment in Buliisa district.

The deceased was siphoning fuel from trucks belonging to China Chongqing International Construction Company Limited-CICO together with three others still at large.

The soldiers who acted on a tip-off that the deceased and his accomplices were siphoning fuel from the company trucks shot Mutazindwa after he attempted to flee as he was caught red-handed siphoning fuel.
