The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) achieved a significant milestone on Thursday as it was lauded at the Empower Her Awards organized by the Nation Media Group and its partners. Among the accolades bestowed upon URA was the prestigious Woman of the Future Award, recognizing the organization’s dedicated efforts in providing avenues for women in the workplace to excel in their careers and assume leadership and decision-making roles.

Addressing the gathering, the Guest of Honor and Inspector General of Government, Betty Kamya, emphasized the pivotal role of women in shaping the world, highlighting the importance of providing them with access to technology, information, and education to unlock opportunities. Kamya urged women to leverage these resources to their advantage.

URA boasts 178 women in leadership positions, ranging from supervisors to top management. This achievement is underpinned by a robust recruitment system that prioritizes merit-based selection at all levels and ensures female representation on recruitment boards.

Susan Nsibirwa, Managing Director of Nation Media Group, emphasized the importance of women supporting each other in their careers, advocating for mentorship and guidance among women.

Onapito Ekomoloit, Chairman of Nile Breweries Board, stressed the need for a rules-based environment to empower women, highlighting the efficacy of clear rules compared to role-based systems.

In its commitment to empowering women, URA has implemented initiatives such as the Sexual Harassment and Abuse of Office Policy (SHAO), the Special Committee Against Sexual Harassment (CASH), and the URA Ladies Club. These efforts aim to create a conducive environment for women to thrive and grow professionally, supported by Integrity Champion support activities and disciplinary mechanisms.

URA’s exemplary initiatives led to its victory over eight other organizations in clinching the Woman of the Future Award. The organization remains steadfast in its dedication to supporting women’s advancement and career development.

Overall, the recognition underscores URA’s commitment to gender equality and inclusion, setting a precedent for other organizations to follow suit in championing women’s empowerment in the workplace.
