With regions like Mount Elgon, Teso, West Nile, and South Western Uganda currently experiencing above-average rainfall, the Uganda Red Cross Society is gearing up to tackle potential emergencies.

In an interview with Plus News Online, Irene Nakasiita, Communications Head at the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS), underscored the organization’s proactive stance, citing their readiness to respond swiftly to disasters, a common occurrence during this period.

“We’ve deployed teams and positioned relief non-food items in regional warehouses, collaborating closely with district disaster management committees and the Office of the Prime Minister,” Nakasiita emphasized.

She also mentioned leveraging support from donors like the European Union and a consortium led by Oxfam Uganda, focusing on the Mount Elgon region.

“We are fully prepared, ensuring our response plan is activated promptly to address the immediate needs of those affected,” Nakasiita added.

According to the Uganda National Meteorological Authority’s climate update released on April 3, heightened rainfall, accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms, is anticipated across most parts of the country, signaling the peak of the rainy season in certain areas.

The update also warns of increased risk of waterborne diseases, including cholera and bilharzia, due to sporadic flash floods.

Temperature projections for April indicate a range of 24 to 28 degrees Celsius in the northern sector and 18 to 24 degrees Celsius in the southern sector.

In November 2023, data collected by the Uganda Red Cross Society revealed over 2,000 people affected by floods, with anticipatory measures indicating the situation could worsen without immediate intervention.
