On 9th October 2025, Uganda was celebrating 63 years of Independence and the country has registered progress in infrastructure and economic development. However, there is a need to strengthen and protect the country’s resources, economy and other government programs or projects.
According to Capt. John Bosco Bamuturaki Tumusiime, former Mbarara District LC5 Chairman and current Kashari South NRM MP Flag bearer said that in many sectors, the country has developed, especially in the infrastructure, there is a big step compared to the time before Uganda got independence in 1962. He further noted that the country has also developed securitywise and politically where somehow people are free to elect people of their choice in different categories. He says that the country has come far away from the leadership of dictatorship to democracy.
“As much as we register progress, we have some challenges, that time the country or government was planning for a less population of about 6million people, we must agree that its now difficult to cater for a population that is going to 50millions and plus, that’s why we have an outcry of unemployment among the youths, but we thank our government which has atleast created several avenues of living, by skilling Ugandans especially those who do not go far away with formal education, if the youths change in the mindset, and they embrace government programs and projects, am confident that the issue of unemployment will be limited” said Bamuturaki
While speaking to our reporter in his message towards the independence day celebrations, Bamuturaki has however appealed to the public to stop the mentality of ignoring and neglecting government projects which end up being destroyed and vandalised.
According to Bamuturaki, corruption and malpractices have cripple or caused many government projects and programs to collapse due to negligence by local leaders and the members of the public. He said that since 1962 after independence, several government projects and other facilities have been set up during the current regime and the previous ones, but because of corruption and lack of protection, some have been diminished.
“It is an important thing to think that these projects are not for the government alone, they are our projects, it is our role as members of the public to protect them by reporting cases of any kind related to malpractices and corruption being practiced on them. There is what we call sustainability, for example if the community is given water as a project, how are you going to make sure that this source is maintained or looked after and you need it for generations to come, but if you ignored that sense of humor of seeing that these are our projects and you let fight for them, then you will not be the right citizen of Uganda, this is your country and you must be patriotic. I appeal to my people especially from Kashari South county and Uganda at large to wake up and vote the type of leaders who are going to lobby for them the projects which will have purpose on their lives as far as service delivery is concerned,” he added
Bamutariki further noted that the government of Uganda borrows money from other countries to extend services to its people, and it is unvoided because the country has not reached the level to sustain itself without borrowing, and these debts will be paid by taxes from the public. It’s the mandate of the members of the public to protect every project that is brought in their communities and fight for them.
