Dancesport has emerged as one of Uganda’s fastest-growing school sports, attracting significant investment from secondary schools over the past five years since its introduction into the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Ball Games.
The recently concluded USSSA Ball Games II in Gulu highlighted the sport’s remarkable growth, with Ntare School winning the boys’ title while St Julian High School Gayaza were crowned girls’ champions.
Schools Driving the Sport’s Growth
Education leaders attribute Dancesport’s rapid expansion to its appeal among young people and its alignment with Uganda’s competency-based curriculum, making it increasingly attractive to both learners and parents.
Several schools have also introduced bursaries for talented Dancesport athletes, enabling them to pursue quality education while developing their sporting talent.
Among the educationists credited for championing the sport are Mr Jeff Serunjogi of St Julian High School Gayaza, Madam Maria Tulina of St Lawrence Schools and Colleges, Mr Daniel Damulira of St Mark’s College Namagoma, Owek Kiwalabye Male of Gombe Education Services, and Mrs Rebecca of Kajjansi Progressive.
School heads, including Rev. Balinda of Nyakasura School, have also played a vital role in promoting the discipline. Traditional schools such as Ntare School, Mbarara High School, Sacred Heart SS Gulu, Muntuyera High School, Sheema Girls School, Elite High School Entebbe, and St Balikudembe SS Mitala Maria have been instrumental in nurturing Dancesport talent at the grassroots level.
UDSF Strategic Plan Paying Off
The General Secretary of the Uganda Dancesport Federation (UDSF), Mr Barnabas Ssebuyungo, attributed the sport’s growth to the federation’s deliberate strategy of establishing Dancesport clubs in schools across the country.
“We are seeing the results of taking Dancesport to schools. We now have 381 clubs subscribed to the federation, with delegates in 122 districts across Uganda. This is strengthening our regional capacity-building programmes,” Ssebuyungo said.
More Than Just Competition
School administrators believe Dancesport offers benefits beyond competition. The sport promotes discipline, confidence, teamwork, creativity, and self-expression while providing learners with a pathway to national and international representation.
Its unique blend of music, rhythm, artistry, and athleticism has made it one of the most attractive co-curricular activities among today’s learners.
With five years of competition under USSSA and continued expansion into new districts, Dancesport is steadily transforming from an emerging activity into a mainstream school sport with the potential to elevate Uganda’s profile on the global stage.
