The race for national glory at the USSSA Ball Games I girls’ football championship intensified as giants Kawempe Muslim SS, Rines SS, and Latifah Mixed SS all secured convincing victories to storm into the Round of 16.
Defending champions Kawempe Muslim SS were made to dig deep by a resilient Panyadoli Self Help side in a tightly contested Round of 32 clash. The first half ended goalless, with Panyadoli frustrating Kawempe’s attacking threats through disciplined defending. However, Kawempe adjusted tactically after the break, switching to their trademark tik-taka passing style that eventually broke the deadlock.
Cynthia Kirenga opened the scoring before Meble Mukula Adong sealed the victory with a second goal, handing Kawempe a deserved 2-0 win and safe passage into the next round.
Rines SS delivered one of the standout performances of the day, coming from behind to thrash Bunya SS 5-1 at UCU Stadium. Ayerango Justine and Zoena Nandhego each netted a brace, while Nakawuki Trinah added the fifth to cap off a dominant display after an early setback.
Latifah Mixed SS also impressed, overcoming St Andrews Ruhindi with a commanding performance. Pauline Namulinda led the charge with a hat-trick, while Joan Namutwa added another to seal a 4-2 victory. Despite a spirited effort from St Andrews, highlighted by a brace from Esther Ampurira, Latifah’s attacking prowess proved decisive.
Elsewhere, St Noa Girls SS cruised past Kibingo Girls SS with a comfortable 3-0 win, courtesy of a brace from Marion Serenga and a goal from Namata Teddy. Nkoma SS edged Kakungulu Memorial 1-0, while Moyo Star High School secured a thrilling 5-2 victory over Amazing Grace.
Two matches were decided via penalty shootouts after goalless draws in normal time. Uganda Martyrs High School narrowly defeated Bugisu High School 5-4 on penalties, while St Charles Kasasa eliminated Light High School Seguku with a 6-5 shootout victory.
With the competition now heading into the Round of 16, the title contenders are beginning to show their intent, setting the stage for even more thrilling encounters.
