What causes hip pain? How does it go?
The hip is a body area with three large muscle groups. While the muscle group called quadriceps located in the lower part of the leg helps straighten and extend the leg, the hamstring muscle group located in the back area of the hip allows the leg to be stretched backwards. The muscle group located on the inside of the hip allows the hip to be moved forward and backward.
What causes hip pain?
Excessive weight caused by wrong eating habits and lack of physical activity also causes damage to the hip joints. Injuries to the hip joints cause hip pain. Hip joint rheumatism and cartilage tissue destruction, which are more common in women aged 50 and over, are also among the causes of hip pain. Diseases such as tendinitis, which occurs as a result of damage to the ligaments in the hip joint, inflammation of the sacs that cushion the joint (bursitis), and osteoporosis, are also among the causes of hip pain. In addition to hip bone fractures seen in the elderly and osteoporosis patients, aseptic necrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, circulatory problems, polymyalgic rheumatism, ankylosing spondylitis and osteoarthritis are also causes of hip joint pain. In diabetes, which is a chronic disease, pain may occur in the joint areas. Diabetes-related pain, which also occurs in the hip joint, spreads to the legs. Physical activities such as weight lifting that cause excessive strain and a herniated disc can also cause hip pain. If hip pain radiates to the leg and is accompanied by numbness and tingling, sciatica pain in the hip may be present.
How to relieve hip pain?
Intense exercises, constantly standing in the same position, or lack of conditioning can cause pain in the hip muscles and difficulties in walking. Applying ice compress to the area of hip pain can be effective in stopping the pain. Applying ice for 10-15 minutes every 2-3 hours can relieve pain. Massaging the area where the pain occurs is also very effective. Massage with the help of hands, starting from the knee to the hip, relaxes the muscles. If there is a knot during the massage performed with circular movements, placing the thumb and rubbing it with light movements will eliminate the knot. Elevating the legs with a pillow placed under the heels reduces the pain in the hip and is beneficial for eliminating inflammation in this area. The use of steroid-free painkillers minimizes pain and reduces swelling. Avoiding exercise during periods when hip pain is intense prevents muscle tears. Hip pain exercises can be done to prevent pain in the hip muscles. It is recommended to walk for 10-15 minutes before starting the exercises and to stretch or stretch for 5-10 minutes after the exercise. If, despite all these measures, the pain does not go away and becomes increasingly severe, it is necessary to see a specialist doctor.
