Molly Katanga, the widow of the late Henry Katanga, has appeared in Nakawa court to plead her case. She is accused of murdering her husband, and now she’s asking the High Court to grant her bail.

According to the prosecution, Molly Katanga, aged 55, allegedly shot her husband dead with a pistol on November 2nd, 2023, at Mbuya Chwa two Road, Nakawa Division, Kampala Capital City, with premeditation.

Represented by her legal team from Kampala Associated Advocates alongside Tumusiime and Kabega Company Advocates, Molly claims that her lawyers have advised her that the offense is bailable. She asserts her entitlement to the constitutional presumption of innocence.

Court records show that Molly was brought before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate Court on January 24th, 2024, where she was formally charged with murder. Subsequently, she was committed to the High Court for trial.

In her application for bail, Molly maintains her innocence and expresses a strong desire to prove it during the trial whenever it begins.

Prior to her remand at Luzira Women’s Prison, Molly spent over two months at C-Care IHK Hospital, undergoing specialized treatment and five major surgeries to address injuries sustained on the day of her husband’s death. She argues that the prison lacks the necessary post-operative care she requires.

Molly explains that while hospitalized, she was effectively detained and inaccessible to relatives and friends without permission from the Uganda Police Force.

She asserts that she has suitable sureties to guarantee her court appearances and compliance with bail conditions, including a Minister, a Uganda People’s Defence Forces General, and a prominent figure married to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s daughter.

Molly emphasizes her fixed residence at Mbuya I, Mbuya Hill Village, Nakawa Division, Kampala District, under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

She assures the court that, with investigations completed, she poses no risk of interfering with witnesses or the investigative process.

Considering her age, 55, and her medical needs, Molly stresses her lawful conduct and lack of previous criminal charges or convictions.

Molly appeals to the court for bail, citing her role as the sole breadwinner for her family and the dependency of her young child on her care. She expresses concern over the indefinite commencement date of her trial.

This bail application follows the recent release of Molly’s two daughters, Martha Nkwanzi and Patricia Kankwanzi, on cash bail. They were charged with tampering with evidence related to their father’s death.

The case involves five suspects, with Molly Katanga identified as the prime suspect facing murder charges. Her bail application awaits allocation to a judge for a hearing.
