Police in Bombo town council in Luwero district are holding a woman accused of murdering her daughter in a suspected ritual sacrifice. The suspect, identified as Josephine Namatovu, a 31-year-old single mother and resident of Mpakawero Lufula village in Nyimbwa sub-county, is accused of killing 12-year-old, Caroline Tumwesigye.
Tumwesigye was a Primary Six pupil at Bombo Common Primary School in Bombo town council. Reportedly, the mother initially beat her daughter before repeatedly cutting her neck with a machete. She was later found attempting to wash away the blood from the body. She had also mutilated the girl’s fingers and toes. Luwero District Police Commander John Ojokuna explained that the police received information from the area LC1 Chairman, James Mulambuzi, around 7:30 am after residents noticed blood coming from Namatovu’s house.
Upon arrival at the scene, police found Namatovu washing blood from the corpse and subsequently arrested her before transferring her to Bombo Police Station. Ojokuna stated that the deceased had multiple neck wounds and was found lying in the cold. During interrogation, Namatovu confessed to the killing, claiming she sacrificed her daughter to end the family’s abject poverty, which they believed led to their rejection by society.
Namatovu murdered the teenager in the presence of her four-year-old sibling. The police rescued Namatovu’s other two children, unharmed, and transferred them to the Children Reception Centre in Luwero town. Angry residents attempted to lynch Namatovu, but the police intervened and took her into custody. The police have transferred the victim’s body to the City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
They also recovered a machete that is believed to have been used in the murder. This incident follows a similar one last year, where Yasin Sserunga, a primary two pupil of Destiny Primary School, was murdered in their home garden in Kisule Butanza village, Luwero. Some of his body parts were removed and taken away. According to the Police crime report, Luwero recorded 90 homicide cases in 2023, ranking among the highest in the country.
