The West Nile sub-region is enveloped in mourning following the passing of Zombo Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Lt Col (rtd) Pius Alitema, on March 8. Leaders and residents alike express profound shock and sorrow at his sudden demise, particularly given his apparent good health just days prior.

According to accounts from local leaders, Lt Col Alitema had attended a burial in Maracha District on March 7 and exhibited no signs of illness. His unexpected passing occurred while en route to Arua Regional Referral Hospital, where he was referred for further treatment due to low blood pressure complications.

The loss of Lt Col Alitema reverberates deeply throughout the region, with tributes pouring in from various quarters. Mr. James Oyulu, Zombo District chairperson, lauded Alitema’s dedication to his duties, emphasizing his pivotal role in maintaining peace and security during turbulent times in Zombo.

Former Zombo District Chairperson, Mr. Emmy Kizito Kakura, hailed Lt Col Alitema as a consummate professional, describing him as approachable and instrumental in fostering unity among people. Similarly, Mr. Omito Robert Steen, Pakwach District chairperson, praised Alitema’s integrity and mobilization skills, highlighting his distinguished career in the UPDF.

Reflecting on Lt Col Alitema’s background, Mr. Herbert Atuhaire, Principal Human Resource Officer at the Office of the President, noted his extensive service, including 30 years with the Internal Security Organization (ISO). The Office of the President will oversee burial arrangements, underscoring the significance of Alitema’s contributions.

Dr. Mark Bonny Bramali, Zombo District Health Officer, provided insights into Lt Col Alitema’s medical condition, citing complications related to low blood sugar and diabetes. Despite efforts to stabilize him, Alitema’s condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to his untimely demise during transportation to Arua.
