More than 50 radio stations across Uganda could be forced off air by June 30 after being listed among broadcasters operating without valid licences, raising fresh concerns about regulatory compliance in the country’s media sector.
A list of unlicensed radio stations shows that at least 55 broadcasters spread across different regions of Uganda risk losing their frequencies unless they regularize their operations before the deadline.
Among the stations facing possible closure are several well-known broadcasters, including Voice of Toro (101.0 FM) in Toro, Radio 4 (103.3 FM) in Kampala, Akaboozi Kubiri (104.4 FM) in Mbale, Voice of Bunyoro (93.6 FM) in Masindi, Voice of Lango in Lira and Oyam, and Nile FM (94.1 FM) in Arua.
The list also includes community, faith-based and commercial stations operating in districts such as Kabale, Gulu, Soroti, Jinja, Tororo, Moroto, Busia, Hoima, Wakiso and Yumbe.
Industry observers say the move signals a renewed effort by regulators to enforce licensing requirements and ensure compliance with broadcasting standards.
The affected stations range from major urban broadcasters to rural community radios that serve as critical sources of information for local populations. Several educational, religious and development-oriented broadcasters have also been listed, including ABC Radio operated by Africa Bible University in Kampala, DOK FM in Kabale, IUIU FM in Mbale and Bidi Bidi FM in Yumbe.
Others on the list include Hope Radio in Kabale, ABS FM in Gulu, Endhuba FM in Kamuli, Signal FM in Mbale, City FM in Jinja, Spice FM in Hoima, TBS in Soroti, Tiger FM in Wakiso and Amazon Radio in Kakumiro.
The development has sparked concern among listeners and media stakeholders, particularly in regions where local radio remains the primary source of news, public information and community engagement.
Media analysts note that while regulatory compliance is essential, any closure of broadcasters could have far-reaching consequences for information access, especially in rural communities where alternative media platforms remain limited.
The looming deadline places pressure on affected broadcasters to resolve outstanding licensing issues and avoid potential disruption to their operations.
If enforcement proceeds as expected after June 30, Uganda’s broadcasting landscape could witness one of the largest regulatory crackdowns on unlicensed radio stations in recent years.
Whether the affected stations manage to regularize their status before the deadline remains to be seen, but for now dozens of broadcasters across the country are racing against time to remain on air.
