Local Council One (LCI) and Local Council Two (LCII) leaders in Fort Portal Central Division have approved a resolution allowing city authorities to utilize part of their revenue shares and service fees to support the purchase of a city grader aimed at improving service delivery and infrastructure maintenance.
The resolution was passed during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting held on Thursday, where city leaders discussed strategies for strengthening public services and enhancing revenue mobilization.
Speaking at the meeting, Central Division Mayor emphasized that acquiring a grader remains a priority for the city, noting that the equipment would significantly improve road maintenance, drainage works, and other essential public services.
“The grader will greatly enhance our ability to maintain roads and respond to infrastructure challenges more efficiently,” the mayor said, adding that the investment would reduce dependence on hired equipment and improve service delivery across the city.
Fort Portal City Mayor, Rev. Willy Kintu Muhanga, welcomed the support from local leaders and described the resolution as a demonstration of commitment toward sustainable urban development.
Muhanga revealed that ex-gratia payments for local council leaders had not yet been released by the relevant authorities but assured beneficiaries that the funds would be disbursed immediately upon receipt.
He also encouraged property owners within the city to form an association, explaining that the organized body would be considered for the tender to collect property taxes on behalf of the city.
According to Muhanga, the city is pursuing several initiatives aimed at strengthening revenue collection and improving operational efficiency.
He announced that both Central and North divisions intend to acquire pickup trucks during the current financial year to facilitate revenue mobilization and field operations. The city, he added, plans to purchase the grader during the 2026/2027 financial year.
North Division Mayor Joseph Mashuhuku said his council had already resolved to channel this financial year’s Local Council One and Two 35 percent revenue share toward the purchase of a division pickup truck.
He explained that the vehicle would support revenue collection activities and improve monitoring of government programs within the division.
“We believe that investing in transport means investing in better service delivery and improved revenue performance,” Mashuhuku said.
The Resident City Commissioner (RCC) of Fort Portal, Asumini Nasike, commended local council leaders for their continued efforts in supporting government programs and strengthening service delivery systems.
Nasike urged the leaders to remain actively involved in the implementation, monitoring, and commissioning of government projects to ensure that communities fully benefit from public investments.
Meanwhile, Fort Portal City NRM Chairperson Claire Kasande praised the city leadership for fostering unity and cooperation among stakeholders.
She noted that the collaboration between political leaders, technical staff, and local councils has played a vital role in advancing development initiatives and improving service delivery across the city.
The resolutions passed during the meeting are expected to strengthen Fort Portal City’s capacity to maintain infrastructure, improve revenue collection, and enhance the delivery of services to residents as the city continues its efforts to modernize urban management systems.
