Edema occurring in different parts of the body increases in the summer months. Anadolu Health Center Internal Medicine and Nephrology Specialist Assoc. Prof. stated that edema can also be a sign of various diseases and that the situation causing edema should be thoroughly investigated. Dr. Enes Murat Atasoyu said, “In addition, situations such as inactivity, excess weight, diabetes, and a diet rich in salt and carbohydrates trigger edema. “Edema is more common in depressed people,” he said.

In the summer months when the weather is hot, it can cause dilation of the veins. Anadolu Health Center Internal Medicine and Nephrology Specialist Assoc. Prof. emphasizes that this enlargement slows down the return of blood to the heart, especially in the legs and feet, and can often cause a temporary edema in those areas due to the effect of gravity. Dr. Enes Murat Atasoyu said, “Edema, which is frequently encountered in conditions such as heart, liver, thyroid and kidney failure, may also increase with the effects of some medications and the pregnancy period.”

Edema is seen on the face in the morning and in the legs in the evening.

Internal Medicine and Nephrology Specialist Assoc. Prof. states that edema may develop throughout the body in kidney, heart, liver and thyroid diseases. Dr. Enes Murat Atasoyu said, “However, edema draws attention as a condition that is often noticed in the legs due to the effect of gravity. “During the night sleep process, with the body in a horizontal position, edema in the legs can spread to other parts of the body and even to the face,” he said. Assoc. Prof. said that this is the reason why edema occurs mostly on the face and hands when you wake up in the morning. Dr. Atasoyu explained, “During the daily hustle and bustle, towards the evening the edema fluid descends to the legs and swelling occurs again in this area.”

Edema is more common in people who move less

Internal Medicine and Nephrology Specialist Assoc. Prof. points out that there is no age or gender difference in edema formation. Dr. Enes Murat Atasoyu said, “However, the idiopathic form, which is defined as the disease that occurs without a specific cause, occurs almost exclusively in women, especially before menopause.” Assoc. Dr. Atasoyu underlined that edema is also a common condition in people who are less active, overweight, diabetic, have a diet rich in salt and carbohydrates, and have a depressed, tense mood and temperament.

Foods that cause edema

Assoc. Prof. stated that spinach, cabbage, arugula, mint, asparagus, parsley, beet, grapes, green beans, pineapple, zucchini, onion, leek, garlic, and whole grains containing vitamin B and iron help relieve edema. Dr. Enes Murat Atasoyu pointed out that excessive consumption of such foods should be avoided, keeping in mind that they may interact with diuretic drugs.

Diuretics should not be used unconsciously.

Assoc. Prof. pointed out that the use of some herbal products sold under the name of diuretics can damage the kidneys. Dr. Atasoyu warned: “It should not be forgotten that unconsciously used drugs and treatment methods damage other organs in the body.” Assoc. Prof. stated that a doctor should be consulted regarding edema. Dr. Atasoyu explained the conditions that cause edema in the body as follows:
