At Mulago National Referral Hospital, hope took physical form as dozens of persons with disabilities stood, balanced, and, for some, walked again for the first time in years.
The occasion was a Free Prosthetic Leg Camp organized by the Ruparelia Foundation, spearheaded by businessman Sudhir Ruparelia, in memory of his late son Rajiv Ruparelia. The initiative drew participants from across Uganda, all seeking a second chance at mobility and independence.
Described by organizers as “love in action,” the camp provided prosthetic limbs and orthopedic support to beneficiaries, restoring not just movement but dignity and possibility. Medical teams at the hospital’s Orthopedic Department worked tirelessly to fit recipients and guide them through the first steps of their new journey.
The emotional event also served as a solemn remembrance of Rajiv Ruparelia, whose life was tragically cut short in a car accident at the Busabala flyover on May 3. One year on, his legacy is being reshaped into acts of compassion that continue to uplift communities.
Speaking at the ceremony, family members, including Sudhir, his wife Jyotsna, and relatives, were honored for transforming personal grief into a nationwide gesture of generosity. The Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting persons with disabilities, emphasizing inclusion and equal opportunity.
Beyond the medical outreach, the day carried a deeper national reflection. Voices at the event and across the country renewed calls for stronger road safety measures, with some proposing that May 3 be recognized as a National Road Safety Day in memory of lives lost.
For the beneficiaries at Mulago, however, the focus was immediate and life changing. Each step taken was a quiet victory, a reminder that from loss can emerge purpose, and from tragedy comes a renewed commitment to humanity.
Rajiv Ruparelia’s legacy lives on, not in mourning but in movement, in hope, and in the countless new beginnings made possible.
