The Inspectorate of Government (IG) has formally launched a preliminary investigation into the wealth and conduct of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, opening a new legal front in the widening scrutiny surrounding one of Uganda’s most influential political figures.
The development was confirmed by Inspector General of Government Aisha Nalule Nabukenya Batala, who said the anti-corruption agency is acting on several petitions lodged against the outgoing Speaker.
In a statement posted on the Inspectorate’s official account on X, the ombudsman’s office said: “We have received several petitions against former Speaker @AnitahAmong and have commenced preliminary investigations. We can’t divulge any information prematurely.”
The announcement marks the first official confirmation that Among is under active review by the Inspectorate of Government, Uganda’s constitutional body mandated to investigate corruption, abuse of office and illicit enrichment.
The probe comes amid intensifying pressure on the embattled legislator following a series of dramatic security operations targeting her properties and office.
In recent days, joint teams of investigators reportedly searched residences linked to Among in Nakasero, Kigo and Ntinda as part of broader investigations into alleged corruption, unexplained wealth and money laundering.
Security agencies have also sealed her parliamentary office, along with that of Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesige Kasaija, declaring the premises active crime scenes as forensic teams continue collecting evidence.
The developments have sent shockwaves through Uganda’s political establishment and heightened uncertainty within the ruling National Resistance Movement following Among’s unexpected withdrawal from the race for Speaker.
While the Inspectorate has not disclosed the specific allegations under review, the preliminary inquiry could pave the way for a full investigation should sufficient evidence be established.
The Inspectorate’s intervention adds significant weight to the ongoing anti-corruption campaign that has gathered momentum in recent weeks, with authorities signaling a renewed determination to investigate senior public officials and recover misappropriated public resources.
