Absa Bank Uganda and the Kampala Hash House Harriers have revealed details about the upcoming Absa KH3-7 Hills Run scheduled for Sunday, March 17, 2024.
Set to commence at Kololo Independence Grounds, the race will traverse the seven iconic hills of Kampala.
“Following a highly successful inaugural edition in 2023, we anticipate an even more remarkable run this year, with proceeds dedicated to the noble cause of Keeping the Girl Child in School. This event not only promotes physical well-being but also fosters unity within our community,” stated Mumba Kalifungwa, Managing Director of Absa Bank Uganda.
This year’s run will attract Uganda’s professional long-distance athletes, offering them the chance to win a 50*100ft plot of land. The event aligns with the core objective of the Kampala Hash House Harriers, which is to encourage physical fitness among its members, according to Wilberforce Kyambadde, the KH3 Hash Master.
The run will feature both a 5km and a 21km long-distance race and has garnered support from various sponsors including Kampala Pharmaceuticals Industries, Kakira Sugar Limited, UAP Old Mutual, Crown Beverages, Case Medical Services, DHL Express, Bakaima Real Estate Agents, Hostalite Ltd, New Vision, Next Media Services, and Fenon Premium Events.
Expressing gratitude for the support received, Mumba emphasized the credibility of the run and its profound social impact. Corporate teams and individuals are encouraged to participate, with registration fees ranging from UGX 30,000 to UGX 5 million, depending on the category.
In its inaugural edition, the run attracted over 2,500 participants and raised UGX 200 million. The funds were utilized to address challenges faced by the girl child, including school reintegration for teenage mothers, skills training, and menstrual hygiene management.
During a press briefing, Absa Bank Uganda provided accountability for the funds disbursed in 2023, highlighting the positive outcomes achieved. A total of 2,750 girls benefited from the initiative, with support from various partners such as World Vision, TERRWODE, Wakisa Ministries, IYAWE, and Mukono High School.
Efforts in 2024 will focus on sustaining girls’ education through financial support and menstrual hygiene management initiatives. Despite improvements in enrolment rates, significant challenges persist, underscoring the importance of initiatives like the Absa KH3-7 Hills Run in ensuring equal access to education for all children.
Kalifungwa reiterated Absa’s commitment to building a better future for individuals, businesses, and communities through initiatives like the Absa KH3-7 Hills Run, emphasizing the importance of education as a fundamental right for every child, regardless of gender.
