A major transition occurred within the United Nations Guard Unit X (UNGU X) stationed in Somalia, as Lt Col Emmanuel Odongo assumed command. This transfer of leadership was marked by a formal ceremony where the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), Her Excellency CATRIONA LIANG, presented the United Nations flag to Lt Col Odongo.

In her address, SRSG Catriona Liang recognized the crucial role played by UNGU X in ensuring the safety and security of United Nations personnel, facilities, and assets in Somalia. She expressed gratitude to the outgoing commander, Lt Col Peter Omeja, for his dedicated service in fulfilling the unit’s mandate without any incidents.

SRSG Liang also extended condolences to the Government of Uganda and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) for the loss of two UNGU X members due to separate incidents, emphasizing the inherent risks faced by peacekeeping forces in challenging environments.

Assuring continued support, SRSG Liang conveyed her best wishes to both the outgoing and incoming commanders, underscoring the importance of their mission in maintaining peace and stability in Somalia. She was accompanied by Mr. Joseph Katuramu, Principal Security Advisor, among others.

Presiding over the handover ceremony on behalf of the Commander Land Forces, Lt Gen Kayanga Muhanga, was Contingent Commander Brig Gen Mbusi Lukwago. Brig Gen Lukwago commended the outgoing commander, Lt Col Peter Omeja, for his exemplary leadership and welcomed Lt Col Emmanuel Odongo to his new role.

Highlighting the evolving security situation in Somalia, Brig Gen Lukwago stressed the need for heightened vigilance and strategic planning in light of the ATMIS drawdown and the persistent threat posed by Al-Shabaab. He urged Lt Col Odongo to maintain a balance between diplomacy and firmness in executing the unit’s duties.

Brig Gen Francis Chemo, the Defence Attaché to the Federal Republic of Somalia, lauded the performance of UNGU X and encouraged the incoming commander to uphold the unit’s reputation for professionalism and discipline. He also encouraged the outgoing commander to cherish the contributions made during his tenure.

The handover ceremony was attended by various officials, including Financial Intelligence Advisor SP Tumushabe Lydia, Contingent Military Information Officer Lt Col ALEX Ahabyona, and Contingent Counter Intelligence Officer Maj Mucunguzi, among others. It marked a pivotal moment in the ongoing peacekeeping efforts of UNGU X in Somalia.
