Congo beat South Sudan 1-0 to top Group K of the Morocco 2025 AFCON Qualifiers that also has Uganda and South Africa.

Chandler Massanga’s long range effort in the first half paid off, as he scored to put the hosts ahead, and it was the only goal Congo needed to take all the three points at the Stade Alphonse Massemba-Débat.

There was no Rashid Toha in the lineup, as Emmanuel Loki, Gaddafi Wahab, Joseph Dhata, Tito Okello, Alfred Leku, and Geriga Atendele all featured for South Sudan against Congo.

It was the first game of the group, as Bafana Bafana wait to face off with the Uganda Cranes in South Africa on Friday.

Before playing, South Sudan and Uganda are both above South Sudan’s Bright Stars, who are now sitting bottom of the table, with no point and -1 goals after losing their only one game played so far.

In the upcoming group K matches, Uganda will host Congo at Namboole stadium on September 9, as South Africa visit South Sudan at Juba Stadium on September 10.

In the other AFCON qualifiers played on Thursday, Ghana lost 1-0 to Angola, Central African Republic beat Lesotho 3-1, Guinea-Bissau won 1-0 against eSwatini, while Malawi lost at home 3-2 to Burundi.

In total, there are 48 teams, divided into four per each one of the 12 groups, challenging for the 24 spots at the next edition of Africa’s most prestigious football tournament to be played in Morrocco in 2025.
