The 11th edition of the renowned annual Kabaka Birthday Run was officially launched in a ceremony held on February 27th, 2024, at Bulange, Mengo. Airtel Uganda, in partnership with the Buganda Kingdom, marked the occasion with a commitment to support significant causes, particularly focusing on the imperative goal of ending HIV/AIDS by the year 2030.

Recognized as a pivotal event on both Airtel Uganda’s and the nation’s annual calendar, the Kabaka Birthday Run celebrates the birthday of the esteemed Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II. Beyond festivities, the run serves as a platform to champion noble causes that resonate deeply with the community. This year’s theme, “Ending HIV/AIDS by 2030,” reflects the collective determination to combat one of the most critical global health challenges.

Manoj Murali, Managing Director of Airtel Uganda, urged Ugandans to participate in the marathon with a purpose. Emphasizing the significance of collective action, Murali emphasized the need to rally together to support those affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. He highlighted that proceeds from the run would directly contribute to the fight against HIV/AIDS, aligning with the overarching theme of eradicating the disease by 2030.

Sam Ntulume, Executive Director and Chief Operations Officer of I&M Bank, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with the Kabaka Birthday Run. He underscored the bank’s commitment to making a tangible difference in the fight against AIDS while fostering meaningful connections with clients and communities.

Addressing the vision behind the initiative, Charles Peter Mayiga, the Katikkiro of Buganda, emphasized the kingdom’s dedication to promoting social and economic transformation. Mayiga stressed the pivotal role of health in driving societal progress and acknowledged the collaborative efforts with international organizations and local stakeholders in combating HIV/AIDS. He lauded Airtel Uganda’s significant contribution to the success of the Kabaka Birthday Run, highlighting the event’s importance to the people of Buganda.

Mayiga extended gratitude to partners who shared the kingdom’s vision, including Airtel Uganda, I&M Bank, Nivana Water, UNAIDS, and the Uganda AIDS Commission. He emphasized the inclusive nature of Buganda Kingdom’s initiatives, such as the BIKA Cup and Masaza Cup, aimed at nurturing grassroots talent and fostering unity among Ugandans for social and economic advancement.
