At least 42 people have been killed in eastern Chad after a dispute between two families over access to water spiraled into a wave of retaliatory violence, government officials confirmed.
Deputy Prime Minister Limane Mahamat announced the death toll during a visit on Monday to the village of Igote in Wadi Fira province, near the Sudanese border, where the clashes began on Saturday. He said 10 others were injured in the violence and have been transferred to a provincial health center for treatment.
According to Mahamat, what began as a localized disagreement quickly escalated into a broader cycle of reprisals that spread across a wide area, prompting intervention by the national army. He credited a “swift response” by security forces with containing the unrest, adding that the situation is now under control.
Authorities have initiated both a customary mediation process within the community and formal judicial proceedings to determine criminal responsibility for the killings.
Intercommunal violence linked to competition over scarce resources such as land and water is a recurring issue in Chad. Similar clashes last year between farmers and herders in the country’s southwest left dozens dead and destroyed homes.
The latest violence comes amid growing pressure on Chad’s eastern regions due to the ongoing war in neighboring Sudan. Hundreds of thousands of refugees have fled across the border, placing additional strain on already limited resources and heightening tensions in vulnerable communities.
In response to security concerns, Chad closed its border with Sudan in February, citing fears of armed fighters crossing into its territory and the risk of the conflict spilling over.
The war in Sudan has had devastating consequences, with United Nations estimates putting the death toll at over 40,000 people, though humanitarian organizations believe the true figure could be significantly higher. The conflict has displaced more than 14 million people and triggered what aid agencies describe as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with famine conditions reported in several areas.
Mahamat emphasized that the Chadian government is committed to taking “all necessary measures” to prevent further instability in the eastern border region.
