The Anti-Corruption Division of the High Court has fixed June 17, 2026, as the date for the mention of a high-profile corruption case involving Igara East MP Michael Mawanda Maranga who is also Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU)’s top leader, and five co-accused persons over the alleged diversion of billions of shillings earmarked for compensation of Buyaka Growers Cooperative Society Limited.
According to a hearing notice issued by the court, the matter will come before Lady Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga at the Anti-Corruption Division in Kampala. The case arises from criminal proceedings instituted by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) against Mawanda and five others.
The accused include Mawanda, Ignatius Wamakuyu Mudimi, Paul Akamba, Julius Taitankoko Kirya, Leonard Kavundira and Geraldine Ssali Busulwa.
Court records indicate that the prosecution accuses the suspects of conspiring to defraud government of funds amounting to Shs7.3 billion that had been allocated for compensation of Buyaka Growers Cooperative Society Limited. The alleged offences were committed between 2019 and 2023.
According to charges previously sanctioned by the Director of Public Prosecutions, the accused allegedly participated in a scheme to divert public funds intended for the cooperative society.
Prosecution alleges that Mawanda diverted Shs1.5 billion in October 2021 for purposes unrelated to those for which the funds had been appropriated. Wamakuyu is accused of diverting Shs2.3 billion, while Akamba allegedly diverted Shs200 million. Kirya is also accused of diverting approximately Shs2.2 billion.
The prosecution further contends that the accused conspired to defraud Buyaka Growers Cooperative Society of an additional Shs3.4 billion that was meant to compensate members of the cooperative.
The case has attracted significant public interest due to the large sums involved and the prominence of some of the accused persons. It is one of several high-profile corruption cases currently before the Anti-Corruption Division as authorities intensify efforts to recover misappropriated public funds and hold accountable those accused of abusing public resources.
The hearing scheduled for June 17 is expected to provide direction on the progress of the case and pave the way for subsequent proceedings.
Under Ugandan law, all accused persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.
