The Uganda Police Force has issued a clarification regarding an earlier statement about an incident involving an alleged fraud suspect in Kiwatule, acknowledging that preliminary information initially communicated to the public inaccurately suggested that the incident had not occurred.
In a revised statement, police attributed the error to a communication gap in the preliminary information received from Kiwatule Police Station and expressed regret for the misrepresentation.
According to police, the matter was formally reported at Kiwatule Police Station under Kira Road Division and is being investigated under Criminal Reference Book (CRB) 064/2026.
The incident reportedly occurred at around 6:30 p.m. in Kazinga Zone, Kiwatule Parish, Nakawa Division, Kampala.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the complainant, who had been searching for rental property through the online marketplace Jiji Uganda, came into contact with Lubega Fahad, 30, who allegedly presented himself as a property agent. After inspecting a house in Kyanja and agreeing to rental terms of UGX 3 million per month, the complainant was reportedly instructed to deposit UGX 12 million, covering three months’ rent and a security deposit, into a DTB Bank account registered in Lubega Fahad’s names.
Police said the payment was made on June 2, 2026, at approximately 2:00 p.m. at Metroplex Mall. However, when the complainant later revisited the property, the caretaker reportedly informed him that the house was not available for rent and was instead being offered for sale.
Attempts to reverse the transaction proved unsuccessful after the funds had already been withdrawn. The complainant was subsequently advised to formally report the matter to police.
Before completing the reporting process, the complainant allegedly received information that the suspect had been spotted at the bank. Upon returning, he found that the suspect had already been apprehended.
Police further stated that the suspect later escaped from the bank while under the watch of a security guard, prompting members of the public to pursue and assault him.
When officers responded, they found that the suspect had already been apprehended and appeared weak. Police noted that no visible signs of torture were observed at the time.
The suspect was later taken into custody at Kiwatule Police Station but died shortly after arrival. His body was subsequently transferred to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Authorities said investigations into both the alleged fraud and the circumstances surrounding the subsequent mob action remain ongoing.
The Uganda Police Force reiterated its condemnation of mob justice, urging members of the public to hand over suspects to law enforcement agencies for proper handling through established legal procedures.
