Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has urged the leadership of the Catholic Church in Uganda to collaborate with the government in enhancing wealth creation at the household level. His remarks came during the Memorial Lecture held at Hotel Africana on Thursday, March 7, 2024, in honor of the Late Archbishop Joseph Kiwanuka, organized by the Lubaga Cathedral Foundation under the leadership of Kampala Archbishop Paul Ssemwogerere.

Tayebwa emphasized the necessity for the African church and society to prioritize wealth creation as a means to uphold its values and safeguard itself from external influences. He cautioned against heavy reliance on foreign aid, highlighting the potential risks associated with such dependency, including pressure to adopt ideologies contrary to Christian principles.

Addressing concerns about external pressures undermining traditional Christian values, Tayebwa stressed the importance of self-reliance for the church. He noted instances where foreign donors withdrew support from initiatives such as HIV/AIDS programs, underscoring the need for the church to become financially independent.

Expressing gratitude for the church’s contributions in education and healthcare, Tayebwa urged the Catholic Church to embrace wealth creation initiatives. He emphasized the significance of economic empowerment for personal liberation and societal advancement, aligning with the government’s focus on wealth creation efforts.
