Fishermen at the Kigungu landing site in Entebbe Municipality, Wakiso District, are facing a troubling dilemma as a shortage of condoms raises concerns about the potential increase in cases of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The scarcity of condoms at the landing site has sparked worries among the fishing community, who rely on these essential resources to protect themselves and their partners.

The shortage of condoms is attributed to sex workers who allegedly hoard them from health centers and other public places, subsequently selling them at inflated prices. Fishermen like Mr. Robert Mukisa express frustration over the difficulty in accessing condoms due to their unavailability and high cost. He highlights the precarious situation faced by fishermen, where the choice between purchasing condoms or engaging with sex workers becomes a matter of financial strain and personal risk.

During a Women’s Day outreach event at the landing site, Family Medical Point (FMP) provided free condoms to fishermen, offering a ray of hope amidst the shortage. Emmanuel Muwanguzi, a fisherman, expressed relief and gratitude for the distribution of condoms, emphasizing their importance in safeguarding against HIV and gonorrhea. He dispelled misconceptions within the community, such as the belief that excessive consumption of ‘Bushera’ could provide protection against HIV, acknowledging the critical role of condoms in promoting safe sexual practices.

The disparity in HIV/AIDS prevalence between men and women in Uganda, as highlighted by the World Health Organization (WHO), underscores the importance of ensuring access to preventive measures such as condoms. With women disproportionately affected by the disease, initiatives to address condom shortages and promote awareness of safe sex practices are crucial for mitigating the spread of HIV/AIDS and STDs within vulnerable communities.
