The State Minister for Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives, Mr. David Bahati, delivered a stern warning to National Resistance Movement (NRM) registrars during a gathering of Kabale district leaders on Saturday in Kabale town. The warning came ahead of the commencement of registration and register update exercises for NRM members in preparation for the 2026 general election.

Minister Bahati, who also serves as the Kabale District NRM chairman, emphasized the importance of ensuring that only Ugandan citizens of legal voting age are registered as party members. He cautioned against any attempts to register non-Ugandans or underage individuals, stating that registrars found engaging in illegal registration practices could face severe consequences, including imprisonment for up to seven years upon conviction.

Kabale District, situated along the international boundary between Uganda and Rwanda, encompasses seven sub-counties spread across the region. Minister Bahati’s address to district leaders included directives aimed at upholding the integrity of the NRM party register.

“Maintain the integrity of the NRM party register in your villages,” urged Minister Bahati, emphasizing the significance of a transparent and accurate registration process in strengthening the party. He stressed the importance of resolving any disputes that may arise through dialogue, underscoring the unity of NRM members as a family.

Furthermore, Minister Bahati urged all NRM supporters to actively participate in the registration exercise and emphasized the importance of their involvement in party primary elections. He also called upon Ugandans to collaborate with security agencies in combating crime, citing the recent example of boda boda operators who assisted in apprehending suspected killers.

Ms. Barbra Ainebyoona, the party’s district registrar, echoed Minister Bahati’s sentiments and urged sub-county registrars to adhere strictly to registration guidelines. She emphasized the need to update the party register accurately, including removing deceased members and preventing double registrations.

In addition, Nakawa Deputy Resident City Commissioner, Sheik Kassimu Kamugisha, emphasized the importance of transparency in the registration process to maintain unity among party members. Mr. Kamugisha reiterated the four NRM principles of patriotism, pan-Africanism, social-economic transformation, and democracy to Kabale NRM leaders, emphasizing their significance in guiding party activities.
