The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has stepped forward to offer counsel to the National Unity Platform (NUP) party amidst the unfolding fallout surrounding allegations against Mr Matthias Mpuuga, the former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. Speaking at a press conference held at the FDC headquarters in Kampala, Mr John Kikonyogo, the FDC spokesperson, highlighted the importance of handling internal party matters with sensitivity and discretion to avoid eroding public trust and unity within the party.
The controversy emerged when NUP, Uganda’s leading Opposition party, called for Mr Mpuuga’s resignation over allegations of benefiting from a questionable Shs500 million “services award.” However, Mr Mpuuga has vehemently rejected these calls, further intensifying the dispute within the party ranks.
Mr Kikonyogo drew parallels between the current situation in NUP and past challenges faced by FDC, particularly regarding allegations of financial impropriety. He emphasized that the public airing of such internal disputes not only damages the party’s reputation but also undermines its cohesion and effectiveness.
The spokesperson highlighted the need for internal investigations to address allegations effectively. He referenced the FDC elders committee, which thoroughly examined accusations against top party officials and ultimately exonerated FDC Secretary General Nandala Mafabi and Party President Patrick Amuriat Oboi due to insufficient evidence.

Mr Kikonyogo underscored the importance of maintaining public trust, emphasizing the significant impact of such allegations on the party’s image and credibility. He cautioned against the potential repercussions of failing to address internal conflicts sensitively, warning that loss of public trust could be challenging to regain.
Furthermore, Mr Kikonyogo offered practical advice on managing similar situations, urging swift and discreet action to address any wrongdoing within the party ranks. He emphasized the importance of removing implicated individuals from the forefront to mitigate reputational damage and restore public confidence.
Reflecting on the enduring impact of past scandals on FDC members, Mr Kikonyogo highlighted the burden faced by those unjustly implicated in such controversies. He stressed the importance of transparent communication and proactive measures to reassure supporters and dispel misconceptions.
