The Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, recently embarked on a visit to Kakira Sugar Limited, where he conducted an inspection of various units within the establishment. Mr. Mayur Madhvani, the Managing Director, warmly received Gen. Kainerugaba and led him on a comprehensive tour of the factory premises situated in Kakira, Jinja District, Eastern Uganda.
The visit was documented through several photographs shared by Gen. Kainerugaba’s office, highlighting his interaction with Mr. Madhvani and the insights provided regarding the progress of Kakira Sugar Limited and other business ventures affiliated with the Madhvani Group.
Kakira Sugar Limited stands as the flagship enterprise within the extensive portfolio of affiliates constituting the Madhvani group. Founded by Muljibhai Prabhudas Madhvani in 1930, the Madhvani Group has evolved into one of Uganda’s largest conglomerates, with diverse investments spanning various sectors across multiple countries.
The conglomerate, headquartered in Kakira, extends its business footprint into regions beyond Uganda, including Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, the Middle East, India, and North America.

Established in 1930, Kakira Sugar Limited holds the distinction of being Uganda’s foremost sugar producer, contributing significantly to the nation’s sugar output. Operating as one of the oldest sugar milling companies in the country, Kakira Sugar Limited processes over 2 million tonnes of sugarcane annually, yielding a range of essential products.
These products include:
- Over 180,000 tonnes of sugar, accounting for half of Uganda’s national sugar production.
- 51 MW of green electric power generated from bagasse, the residual material from cane crushing.
- More than 20 million liters of high-quality ethanol derived from molasses.
- Award-winning premium potable spirits, encompassing a diverse range of gin, rum, and vodka.
- Various sweets and confectioneries, adding to the diverse product offerings of Kakira Sugar Limited.
The visit of Gen. Kainerugaba underscores the importance of Kakira Sugar Limited within Uganda’s industrial landscape and highlights the significant contributions of the Madhvani Group to the country’s economic development.
