Government Assures Public of Stable Fuel Supply Amid Adequate Stocks and Incoming Deliveries

KAMPALA — The Government of Uganda has reassured the public that the country’s fuel supply remains stable, sufficient, and well-managed despite isolated concerns in some areas.

In a press statement issued by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development in collaboration with the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), officials said routine monitoring of national fuel stocks and supply chains confirms that Uganda maintains adequate reserves of petroleum products.

As of April 20, 2026, available fuel stocks include 70.5 million litres of petrol, equivalent to 19 days of national coverage; 43.2 million litres of diesel, covering 12 days; and 32 million litres of jet fuel, sufficient for 53 days.

Authorities further revealed that additional fuel shipments are already in transit through regional supply routes, including via Mombasa and ports in Tanzania. These deliveries, expected between May and June 2026, will significantly boost national reserves, with projections indicating an additional 183 million litres of petrol, 258 million litres of diesel, and 23 million litres of jet fuel.

The government acknowledged that some retail fuel stations have occasionally experienced stockouts, attributing these disruptions to logistical challenges affecting individual oil marketing companies rather than a nationwide shortage.

It also noted reports of increased pump prices in border towns such as Arua and Tororo, explaining that the hikes are largely driven by heightened cross-border demand. Authorities said engagements with oil marketing companies are ongoing to address any unjustified price increases.

While global oil market trends, currency fluctuations, and geopolitical factors may influence pump prices, the government emphasized that it is closely monitoring the situation to ensure prices remain within manageable levels.

The public has been urged to remain calm and avoid panic buying, as there is no immediate threat to fuel availability. Officials reiterated their commitment to ensuring energy security, market stability, and transparent communication.
