In a display of sheer dominance, Bombers Captain Joshua Tukamuhebwa secured a convincing victory over Guatemala’s Garcia Edgar at the 2024 Olympics Boxing Qualification Tournament in Italy.

The bout, which took place on Tuesday, saw Tukamuhebwa overpower his opponent via a RSC decision to advance into the 63.5kgs round of 16.

Referee intervention became inevitable in the third round as Tukamuhebwa’s relentless performance proved too much for the Guatemalan boxer. With this win, Tukamuhebwa sets his sights on his next challenge, facing off against Jitaru Robert Eusebiu of Romania on Thursday. Eusebiu secured his spot in the next round by defeating Namibian Shailemo Elifas with a unanimous decision (5-0).

The victory not only propels Tukamuhebwa further in the tournament but also keeps Uganda’s hopes alive for representation in the boxing event at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Uganda had sent four boxers to the qualification event, with Tukamuhebwa’s triumph standing out amidst poor results for the team.

Unfortunately, Shafic Mawanda lost his bout via a walkover due to arriving late at the arena.

Yusuf Nkobeza lost against Romanian Paul Andrei Aradoaei.

Emily Nakalema, competing in the Women’s 66kg division, received a bye in the first preliminary round and is set to face Moreira Ivanusa of Cape Verde on Friday, March 8, keeping Uganda’s hopes alive across multiple weight classes.
