KIU Rangers broke JKL Lady Dolphins’ unbeaten start to the season in the National Basketball League on Saturday.

The Rangers won the closely contested battle 55-50 in a game played at the YMCA court in Wandegeya.

JKL Lady Dolphins cane into this fixture having won all their opening seven futures including wins over KCCA Leopards and UCU Lady Canons.

And despite a slow start, trailing 06-12 after the first quarter, JKL cut the deficit to just four points after the first half.

KIU stretched their lead to 13 points after back to back layups by Sharon Kirabo and Ines Kanyamunza to open the fourth quarter.

But after a couple of exchanges, JKL threaded a 12-0 run to tie the game 49-49 with two minutes remaining on the clock.

But JKL shot 0-for-5 from the field from thereafter to compound their misery down the stretch as KIU won a classic.

The teams were even on the boards 69-69 in a game JKL failed to capitalise on KIU Rangers’ 25 turnovers.

Rose Amaniyo scored a double double of 14 points and 19 rebounds while Ines Kanyamunza and Sharon Kirabo added 12 and 11 points in that order.

Fildauce Namuleme after failing to make an impact in the previous game with zero points, zero rebounds and zero assists, responded with eight points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists in a game she proved industrious.

Hope Akello’s monstrous double double of 22 points and 23 rebounds proved in vain while Brenda Ekone (11 points) was the other player for JKL to score in double digits.

The win is the ninth in 10 games for KIU Rangers who will be hoping to close the first round on a high when they take on UCU Lady Canons.
