The Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) has expressed its strong condemnation following the brutal assault on Male Deogratius, also known as Omusawo Tintah, a journalist with Hoima Post and Metro FM. The attack occurred on the night of April 15th, 2024, near Deogratius’s home on Salama Road, Kubadongo area, within the Makindye Division of Kampala.

Deogratius, who is currently receiving medical care at Good Samaritan Clinic in Makindye, suffered significant injuries during the assault, including difficulties in breathing and severe pain in his back, head, and hands. He recounted to UJA that the attackers, who did not steal anything, repeatedly questioned his sources of funding and his courage to write articles advocating for human rights. The assailants warned him to cease his activities or face further danger to himself and his family.

In addition to the physical attack, Deogratius revealed that he has been the target of ongoing threats, receiving several intimidating text messages urging him to abandon his human rights advocacy.

Kabuye Ronald, the UJA Spokesperson and Secretary for Information, stated, “What happened to journalist Male Deogratius is not just criminal but a blatant violation of press freedom under Articles 29 and 40 of the 1995 Constitution of Uganda. We strongly condemn these attacks and demand immediate action to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

This incident underscores the risks journalists face in Uganda, particularly those who are vocal in promoting social justice and accountability. The UJA emphasizes that journalists are often on the front lines, acting as witnesses to injustice and speaking on behalf of the voiceless, which unfortunately makes them targets of violence.

The UJA is calling for a thorough investigation into this heinous act and for the swift prosecution of those responsible, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding press freedom and supporting journalists who face threats and violence in the line of duty.
