Gabriel Lokol | Moroto, (UG): Local investor companies in Moroto have written to the Ministry of Minerals protesting against their staff in Moroto for allegedly extorting money from companies.

According to the letter addressed to the Ministry of Minerals seen by this publication, Mr. Gerald Eneku, a mineral inspector for Karamoja, is accused of staging roadblocks and collecting Shs 1 million per truck unreceipted, claiming it to be taxes.

According to the investors, they are buying stones from Sunbelt Mining Company and the local community and also paying sub-county revenue tax per truck, but they are forced to pay an additional Shs 1 million per truck to Gerald Eneku, and they don’t give receipts for the money they take from us. Where are we heading as Uganda? one of the investors said in the letter.

The Ankole Times has learned that this is not the first time Mr. Eneku is being accused of extortion of money from investors, claiming to be the final man to grant mining lease.

This publication also tried to reach Mr. Kedi, the acting commissioner of mining, but failed as his mobile phone was switched off.

Two years ago, aggrieved locals in Moroto attempted to break into the residence of Mr. Eneku in Moroto with an intention to harm him, but Mr. Eneku was rescued by security personnel.
