MTN Uganda Enhances Coffee Processing in Sironko

Kalaa Mugosi Women Empowerment Ltd in Sironko District, Eastern Uganda has long been a beacon of hope for 1,246 small-scale farmers, striving to uplift community livelihoods through economic empowerment initiatives.

Despite their noble efforts, the enterprise has faced significant challenges in processing and drying wet coffee, hindering the transformation of lives within the community. However, a recent development signals a positive change as Kalaa Mugosi Women Empowerment Ltd received three pulping machines and dryers valued at Shs 20 million from the MTN Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of MTN Uganda.

This support is part of the MTN Changemakers Initiative, launched with the aim of empowering local individuals and organizations to enact meaningful change within their communities. Deogracious Odwori, representing MTN Uganda CEO Sylvia Mulinge, emphasized the importance of such collaborations in driving community development, equity, and inclusiveness.

Expressing gratitude towards MTN Uganda for their investment, Sandra Nakayenze, CEO of Kalaa Mugosi Women Empowerment Ltd, highlighted the critical role of the equipment in enhancing production processes and boosting the economic well-being of the community.

Kalaa Mugosi Women Empowerment Ltd has been a stalwart advocate for economic empowerment, particularly among small-scale farmers, with a significant portion being women. With a vision to uplift local producer livelihoods and ensure sustainable development, the enterprise has played a vital role in fostering community resilience and prosperity.

Florence Nambozo, the Woman Member of Parliament representing Sironko District, commended MTN Uganda for its support, recognizing the potential impact on improving community income through value addition. This initiative aligns with the government’s focus on value addition to enhance commodity export earnings, particularly in the coffee sector.

Uganda, renowned for its coffee production, has witnessed a steady increase in revenue from coffee exports, reflecting the country’s growing prominence in the global market. MTN Foundation’s commitment to investing Shs 500 million in selected projects across Uganda underscores its dedication to fostering economic empowerment, education, health, and community development.

Over the years, MTN Foundation has played a pivotal role in driving positive change through its investment in various sectors, significantly impacting communities nationwide. This latest endeavor reaffirms MTN Uganda’s commitment to building a brighter future for youth, women, persons with disabilities, and rural communities across the country.
