Two police constables stationed at Katuna border police station in Kabale district find themselves in legal trouble after being accused of robbing a Rwandan businessman at gunpoint. The suspects, identified as police constables Gracious Tusiime, 25, and Zechariah Ekiyankundire, 26, are facing allegations of robbery against Thomas Habanabakize, a 38-year-old Rwandan national residing in Rwambu village, Gicumbi district, Northern province, Rwanda.

The incident reportedly occurred on March 1, 2024, when Habanabakize legally crossed into Uganda through the Gatuna-Katuna border, carrying 85,000 Rwandan Francs (equivalent to approximately Shillings 260,000). It is alleged that upon his arrival, the suspects intercepted him, accusing him of possessing counterfeit currency.

Habanabakize’s purpose for crossing into Katuna was to purchase merchandise for his business back in Rwanda. However, upon his arrest by the constables, they allegedly brandished firearms and demanded that he hand over all the money in his possession.

Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, confirmed the incident, stating that preliminary investigations suggest that after robbing the victim, the constables instructed him to return to Rwanda through the porous border, threatening him with dire consequences if he refused.

Upon his return to Rwanda, Habanabakize lodged a complaint with Rwandan security authorities, who subsequently contacted their counterparts in Uganda. This led to the apprehension of the suspects by Ugandan authorities.
