NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW: MASINDI RESIDENTS DECRY SELECTIVE ENFORCEMENT BY AURTHORITIES

Residents of Masindi have expressed concern over what they term as unfair treatment of poor by law enforcement officers especially over wetland issues.

The residents raised this concern on Friday during district budget conference held at education hall within Masindi town.

Benjamin Byarugaba, chairman Masindi district local government service commission says he is not happy with what he termed as selective applications where you find ‘well to do people’ are given permission to exploit government wetlands yet the poor are displaced.

“No one is above the law, many poor people have experienced such situations where they are not listened to as they seek for time or guidance on wetland issues, I want to know whether the office of natural resources is aware about this crisis,” Byarugaba said.

Shirinji Aziz councillor civic ward to municipality demanded for explanation from district Natural resource officer whether his office is much interested in eating money from people than sensitising public on wetland issues.

Aziz also accused office of natural resources Masindi district for allegedly conniving with NFA to still public land.

Betrace Bigirwenkya former district female councillor Budongo sub county also cited unfair treatment of the poor by law enforcement officers over wetland.

Bigirwenkya says the law doesn’t favour whether poor or rich and asked for equity when it comes to enforcement.

Responding to the complaints of the residents, Simon Akweteireho Masindi district natural resources says he will make a follow-up on enforcement team.

He however called upon the public to always follow the guidelines by the enforcement officers as well as protect natural resources from being miss used to avoid cases of climate changes.

The theme for Masindi district local government budget conference for financial year 2026/2027 was full monetisation of the economy through commercial Agriculture industrialization expanding and broading services digital transformation and market access.’
