Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has praised President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) for maintaining peace and stability as Uganda officially commenced the swearing-in of Members of Parliament-elect for the 12th Parliament.
Speaking to journalists at Parliament of Uganda on Tuesday, Among, who was re-elected as Woman Representative for Bukedea District, thanked President Museveni for what she described as the trust he has placed in her leadership.
“I want to thank President Yoweri Museveni who has entrusted me with a very big responsibility of running this Parliament. I am highly indebted to him, and I also thank the security forces for maintaining peace in this country. I wish all Ugandans the very best and congratulate President Museveni upon his swearing-in,” Among said.
Addressing the newly elected legislators, the Speaker urged them to focus on the needs of ordinary Ugandans and dedicate themselves fully to public service.
“As you heard yesterday, this is ‘Kisanja No Sleep.’ We must work for the citizens and for humanity and concentrate on what affects the local person,” she said.
Among also commended the performance of the 11th Parliament, describing it as one of the most productive legislative sessions in Uganda’s history.
“The 11th Parliament has been a very good Parliament. We have done a lot of work. It is one of the most remarkable parliaments we have had in the history of Parliament,” she added.
However, the Speaker declined to comment on questions regarding the ongoing controversy surrounding her bid for a second term as Speaker.
The oath-taking ceremony for Uganda’s 12th Parliament began on Tuesday at Parliament Buildings in Kampala, officially marking the start of the new legislative term following the January 15, 2026 general elections.
The exercise, which runs until Friday, May 15, 2026, started at exactly 8:00 a.m. with the UPDF band playing the national anthem and the East African Community anthem.
At 8:05 a.m., Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesige read the official proclamation and cited the constitutional provisions authorizing him to administer the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Member of Parliament.
The first legislator sworn in was Enos Asiimwe Kinywamachunda, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) MP-elect for Kabula County.
He was followed by Jeje Ababakhar Odongo of Orungo County and Sylvia Alinaitwe Tumuheirwe.
Several senior government officials also took the oath during the morning session, including Vice President Jessica Alupo, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and Third Deputy Prime Minister Moses Ali.
By the lunch break, 97 Members of Parliament had taken the oath of office.
After swearing in, legislators signed the official oath book, underwent biometric registration and took official photographs before addressing the media.
The ceremony was marked by vibrant celebrations, with supporters escorting MPs to Parliament with traditional dancers, drummers and political mobilisers.
The swearing-in proceedings are being broadcast live on selected television and radio stations, as well as on Parliament’s social media platforms, as Uganda ushers in the 12th Parliament with renewed calls for hard work and service to the nation.
