State Minister for Sports Hon. Peter Ogwang challenged the Cricket Cranes to ‘go and prove’ themselves as they embark on their maiden appearance at the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup.

The minister’s remarks came during a grand send-off dinner hosted at Mestil Hotel, Nsambya on Saturday night, an event organized by sponsor Lyca Mobile.

Dubbed ‘The Last Supper,’ the dinner aimed to provide the team with an evening of relaxation and camaraderie with members of the cricket fraternity.

Minister Ogwang used the occasion to reaffirm the government’s commitment to cricket, announcing a significant increase in funding from Shs1.2 billion to Shs3 billion for the 2024/25 financial year.

“Go and prove yourselves. Be disciplined, work hard, believe in God, and be respectful,” Ogwang advised the team, urging them to seize the opportunity on the world stage.

The event was attended by various dignitaries, including UCA board members, members of the Victoria Pearls team, Lyca Mobile officials, and journalists.

The atmosphere was one of support and optimism, reflecting the unity and encouragement from the Ugandan cricket community.

“We are happy to be sent off in good spirits and to know that so many people are behind us and the game,” said team captain Brian Masaba. Reflecting on their recent visit to Sri Lanka, he added, “We see the support from Lyca in a bigger perspective because it offers opportunities for the sport to grow, even in terms of infrastructure.”
